A few last words (for now)

You know that scene in Summer School where the one student suddenly shows up for the final exam after leaving to go to the bathroom on the first day? And his excuse is "my zipper got stuck"? Well, I'm sorry to say that my zipper is stuck, and I don't know how long it will be before I can return.

Beginning next week, a fairly radical career change will force me to suspend my blog (and commenting) indefinitely. I'll be back when I can, but I'm not sure when that will be. Thanks to everyone who has helped make giving this blog up such a difficult thing to do. I'm not worried about leaving DVD Panache unattended for so long, I just hired a nice married couple and their young boy to look after the place while I'm gone.

And since this is the last you'll get from me for a while, here are some last words:

-- I don't know what the riot act is, but given the opportunity, I would rather read it myself, thank you.

-- Finding out exactly how those World War I fighter planes could fire their machine guns without hitting the propeller was one of the greatest revelations in my life.

-- What would I like on my Tombstone? Cheese and pepperoni, yes. But also, black olives.

-- Explaining the combined plots of Terminator and Terminator 2 cannot be done in less than 6 minutes. For T3, figure in another 30 seconds.

-- They key to great Eggs Benedict is using more hollandaise sauce than you think you should. That's right, pour it on.

-- The key to a successful night of Trick-or-Treating is obnoxiousness. It also helps if it's Halloween.

-- There is no greater mystery to mankind than the motivation for someone to have their first name printed on a vanity license plate.

-- Notice to video game designers, you've had 25 years and I still don't have a Last Starfighter game. How much longer must I wait?

-- The most powerful demonstration of human emotion is slamming down a phone while yelling "goddammit!"

-- One of my foremost goals for the rest of my life is to try Baked Alaska. Where do you find it? Does anyone even make it any more?

  1. The very best of luck, Adam. I look forward to your return.

    Oh, and...

The most powerful demonstration of human emotion is slamming down a phone while yelling "goddammit!"

That's why it's a shame the world is full of cellphones with wimpy, silent buttons.

  3. Well hell, Adam. I was finally getting into the habit of coming here regularly (love the "20 Best Simpsons Jokes", by the way). You're a funny guy, and you know movies, and now I'm sad.

    And this...

They key to great Eggs Benedict is using more hollandaise sauce than you think you should. That's right, pour it on.

...is hard to argue with, but worse than not using enough hollandaise is overcooking the egg. I got it at a restaurant once, and they jacked those eggs up really bad. I should have complained more than I did. It was a travesty. And the restaurant was a good one, too! They make great she-crab soup.

One of my foremost goals for the rest of my life is to try Baked Alaska. Where do you find it? Does anyone even make it any more?

I had this same ambition for so long that I forgot I had it until you just reminded me. Also, beef Wellington.

  4. Before the kitschy Large Association of Movie Blogs came along, DVD Panache was the only site I knew of that was devoted to highlighting other movie sites. Having mine listed here was one of the first real accolades my writing ever received on the web. The Internet is not going anywhere, but your life is, so enjoy it and good luck!

  5. See you whenever you return, Adam, and best of luck with the radical changes. Stop by any time.

  6. Jonathan - Thanks, and I keep an old rotary around just for that purpose (not really, but I should).

Moviezzz -- Thanks, and the killer rabbits gag was always my favorite.

Bill -- Lucky to have never encountered overcooked eggs benedict. One time I had it on a bagel, which sort of worked. I have had beef wellington, and it's worth the wait.

Joe -- Thanks for the encouragement. Friday Screen Test will resurrect one day, I've received a lot of inquiries about it this year.

Alan -- Thanks, I know where to find you.

Oh well, best of luck to you Adam - I hope the new career is everything you're hoping it is and I look forward to when you come back (not IF, but WHEN).

  8. Hi!
You have a great blog and I'd like to trade links with you. I have a blog called Demon Women that describes and provides clips from movies, short films and rock videos that depict women as bad girls, ghosts or villians. The URL is http://demonwomen.sensualwriter.com. If your interested in trading links just let me know.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

  9. Whoah. What the. The earth is shaking Adam.

I think now is the time for you to really get some perspective. And that it's more important to keep your blog and than keep a job.

    Come back soon.

  11. "But I haven't done my screentest yet!"

Friday Screen Test was hit hard by the economic downturn, but it will be back after I sell a few more bonds.

The sad thing about the Demon Women site is the lack of actual Demon Women. Us death porn enthusiasts know Demon Women when we see them.

  13. As far as how bullets can be shot through propellers, you might be the only person to appreciate that when I was much younger, I read the biography of Anthony Fokker twice.

Good luck with the new career. And when you return to posting, let us know how the boy genius of yours is doing.

  19. I look forward to your return to the blogosphere. If/when you swing back through pdx look me up and we'll tackle the best @#$% Baked Alaska you ever ate at Papa Haydn. Of course, you'll be forced to listen to a fellow blogger ruminate about all the answers he'd like to change on his Friday Screen Test and how many movie lines he's now converted into everyday speech but it might be worth it for the authentic dessert.

  25. Adjam! Joe Baltake here. This is not about this thread. I'm writing because we both have Blogger sites and I seem to have a problem on my site and was curious if you have the same problem. It's about the followers function. My dashboard says I have 49 followers, but when I click on it, a blank page comes up. No one is listed. I used to be able to check out that feature to see who's following me. Anyway, I was hoping you could check your dashboard and see if your followers are listed. No rush. I'm just curious. I don't know what's going on. It's been like this for months now and there's no way to reach Blogger for a solution. Anyway, if you have any ideas, share. Granted, this is a minor annoyance, but it frustrates me that I can't fix it. Hoping to hear from you.
